How to Use the Select by Color Tool in GIMP
GIMP’s color selection feature—primarily accessed through the Select by Color Tool—allows you to isolate and select all pixels across an image or layer that share a similar color profile. This guide provides a clear walkthrough on how to locate the tool, configure its essential settings like threshold and antialiasing, make precise selections on your canvas, and refine those selections for editing, recoloring, or background removal.
Step 1: Access the Select by Color Tool
You can activate the tool using any of the following methods:
- Keyboard Shortcut: Press
Shift + O. - Menu Bar: Navigate to Tools > Selection Tools > By Color.
- Toolbox: Click the Select by Color icon (a hand pointing at three colored boxes).
Step 2: Configure Tool Options
Before clicking your image, adjust the Tool Options panel (typically located beneath the main toolbox on the left) to match your needs:
- Mode: Choose whether the new selection replaces the
current one, adds to it (
Shift), subtracts from it (Ctrl), or intersects with it (Shift + Ctrl). - Antialiasing: Check this box to smooth the jagged edges of your selection.
- Feather Edges: Enable this to create a soft, blurred boundary around the selection. You can set the blur radius as needed.
- Select Transparent Areas: Turn this on if you want to include fully transparent pixels of the selected color.
- Sample Merged: Check this box if you want the tool to sample colors from all visible layers combined, rather than only the active layer.
- Threshold: This slider controls how strictly the tool matches colors. A low value (e.g., 0–15) selects only pixels nearly identical to the chosen color, while a higher value expands the range to include lighter and darker variations.
- Select by: Choose the color channel to base the selection on (e.g., Composite, Red, Green, Blue, Alpha, Hue, Saturation, or Value). The default is Composite.
Step 3: Make the Selection
- Select the layer you want to edit in the Layers panel.
- Click on the color in your image that you wish to select.
- All areas matching that color across the canvas will be enclosed within animated dashed lines ("marching ants").
- Dynamic Threshold Adjustment: Click and hold your left mouse button on the color, then drag downward or to the right to increase the threshold, or upward/left to decrease it in real-time before releasing.
Step 4: Refine the Selection
- Add More Colors: Hold

Ctrland click on areas you want to exclude from the selection. - Fine-Tune Boundaries: Navigate to the top menu under Select to use options like Grow, Shrink, Border, or Feather to alter the selection boundary by a specific number of pixels.
Step 5: Apply Your Edits
Once the color segment is selected, you can perform your intended actions:
- Delete/Clear: Press
