How to Use Perspective Clone Tool in GIMP
The Perspective Clone tool in GIMP allows you to duplicate parts of an image while automatically adjusting the scale and angle to match the perspective of a target area. Unlike the standard Clone tool, which copies pixels exactly as they are, this tool utilizes a pre-defined perspective grid to warp the cloned pixels so they blend seamlessly into three-dimensional planes. This guide will walk you through setting up your perspective grid, selecting a source, and painting with modified perspective.
Setting Up the Perspective Grid
Before you can clone anything, you must define the perspective of the destination area.
- Select the Tool: Click on the Perspective Clone icon in your toolbox (it looks like a stamp angled over a grid) or press Shift + P on your keyboard.
- Choose Perspective Mode: In the Tool Options dockable dialog, look for the Mode toggle and select Modify Perspective.
- Adjust the Grid: Click on your image to bring up the perspective grid handles. Drag the four corners of the grid to align with the lines of the perspective plane where you want to paste the cloned texture (such as a wall, road, or tilted surface).
Selecting the Clone Source
Once your grid matches the destination plane, you need to tell GIMP what pixels you want to copy.
- Switch to Clone Mode: Go back to the Tool Options dialog and toggle the Mode setting from Modify Perspective to Perspective Clone.
- Set the Source: Hold down the Ctrl key (or Cmd on Mac) and click on the area of the image you want to copy. This sets your anchor point. You will see a crosshair marker appear at this location.
Painting the Cloned Image
With the perspective defined and the source selected, you are ready to apply the effect.
- Adjust Brush Settings: In the Tool Options, choose an appropriate brush size, hardness, and opacity for your project. A soft-edged brush often works best for blending edges.
- Paint the Destination: Click and drag your mouse over the target area. As you brush, GIMP reads the source pixels and dynamically warps them to match the angles and compression of the perspective grid you established in the first step.
- Check the Alignment: If the cloned texture looks distorted or misaligned, switch back to Modify Perspective mode to fine-tune the grid corners, then switch back to Perspective Clone to continue painting.
