How to Use Grid and Snap to Grid in GIMP?
This article provides a quick, step-by-step guide on how to set up a visible grid and enable the “snap to grid” feature in GIMP. By configuring these tools, you can easily align layers, text, and selections with pixel-perfect accuracy. You will learn how to turn the grid on, customize its dimensions to fit your specific project needs, and activate snapping so your cursor automatically locks onto the grid lines.
Activating and Customizing the Grid
Before you can align your artwork, you need to make the grid visible and configure its size to match your project requirements.
- Show the Grid: Open your document in GIMP, go to the top menu, click on View, and select Show Grid. A default grid will appear over your canvas.
- Configure Grid Settings: To change the spacing or color of the grid, go to Image in the top menu and select Configure Grid….
- Adjust Spacing: In the configuration window, look for the Spacing section. You can adjust the width and height independently by clicking the chain icon to unlink them, or keep them equal for perfect squares. Change the unit dropdown (e.g., to pixels, inches, or centimeters) depending on your design needs. Click OK to apply the changes.
Enabling Snap to Grid
Making the grid visible does not automatically make your tools stick to it. You must explicitly turn on the snapping feature.
- Turn on Snapping: Go to the View menu at the top of the screen.
- Select Snap to Grid: Click on Snap to Grid. A checkmark will appear next to it, indicating it is active.
Once enabled, any selection marquee, layer, or path you move near a grid line will automatically “magnetize” and lock directly onto the closest line. If you ever need to move an object freely without the grid pulling it, simply return to the View menu and uncheck Snap to Grid.
