How to Use GIMP Scissors Select for Edge Detection

The Scissors Select tool in GIMP, also known as Intelligent Scissors, allows you to create precise selections around complex shapes by automatically detecting and snapping to high-contrast edges. This guide explains how to activate the tool, place and adjust boundary points around an object, close the selection loop, and convert the path into an active selection for editing, cutting, or masking.

Step 1: Select the Tool

You can activate the Scissors Select tool using any of the following methods:

  • Press the keyboard shortcut I.
  • Go to the top menu and navigate to Tools > Selection Tools > Scissors Select.
  • Click the Scissors Select icon (a pair of open scissors) in the main Toolbox.

Step 2: Configure Tool Options

Before placing points, check the Tool Options panel (typically docked below the Toolbox) to adjust settings:

  • Antialiasing: Check this to smooth the edges of your selection.
  • Feather Edges: Enable this if you want a softer, blended edge rather than a sharp cutout.
  • Interactive Boundary: When checked, GIMP displays the calculated edge in real time as you drag your cursor.

Step 3: Place Anchor Points Along the Edge

  1. Click once on the edge of the object you want to isolate to place your first anchor point.
  2. Move your cursor a short distance along the boundary of the object and click again. The tool will automatically calculate and snap the connecting line to the strongest contrast edge between the two points.
  3. Continue placing points around the perimeter of the object. Keep points closer together on complex curves or areas with low contrast, and spread them farther apart on straight, high-contrast edges.

Step 4: Adjust and Fine-Tune the Path

You can modify the boundary before finalizing the selection:

  • Move a point: Click and drag any existing control point to reposition it.
  • Add a point: Click anywhere on the connecting line between two existing points to create a new control point, then drag it to refine the contour.

Step 5: Close the Loop and Convert to a Selection

  1. To complete the path, click directly on the very first anchor point you placed. The separate line segments will join into a continuous closed loop.
  2. Move your cursor inside the closed outline. The cursor icon will change to indicate a selection can be created.
  3. Click anywhere inside the outline. The solid boundary line will convert into animated dashed lines ("marching ants"), indicating that your active selection is ready to be copied, masked, or edited.
