How to Use Erase Warp in GIMP to Restore Pixels

The Warp Transform tool in GIMP allows for dynamic, fluid pixel manipulation, but over-warping an area is a common issue. This guide explains how to use the "Erase Warp" behavior within the Warp Transform tool to selectively revert manipulated pixels back to their original coordinates without undoing your entire transformation session.

Step 1: Open the Warp Transform Tool

Select the layer containing the image you want to manipulate. Activate the Warp Transform tool by pressing W on your keyboard, or by navigating to Tools > Transform Tools > Warp Transform in the top menu bar.

Step 2: Access the Tool Options

Locate the Tool Options panel (usually docked on the left or right side of the workspace). Under the Warp Transform settings, find the Behavior setting, which defaults to "Move pixels."

Step 3: Switch Behavior to Erase Warp

Click the dropdown menu next to Behavior and select Erase Warp. In this mode, the tool stops distorting the image and instead functions as a selective restoration brush that pulls warped pixels back to their initial, pre-transform locations.

Step 4: Configure the Brush Properties

Before brushing over the canvas, adjust the following settings in the Tool Options dock to control the restoration precision:

  • Size: Set the diameter of the brush to match the specific area you need to restore.
  • Hardness: Lower the hardness for a soft, feathered transition between warped and restored areas.
  • Strength: Reduce the strength if you want to gradually restore pixels with multiple passes, or increase it to 100% to snap pixels immediately back to their original position.

Step 5: Paint Over Distorted Pixels

Click and drag your cursor over the areas where you applied too much warping. The pixels under the brush will incrementally shift back toward their original positions based on your strength and brush settings.

Step 6: Commit or Continue Editing

You can freely switch back and forth between "Move pixels" (or any other warp mode) and "Erase Warp" within the same active session. Once you are satisfied with the final result, press Enter on your keyboard to render and commit the changes to the layer.
