How to Use Allow Growing in GIMP Crop Tool
In GIMP, the Crop tool is typically used to reduce an image's dimensions, but enabling the "Allow growing" setting lets you drag crop boundaries outward into empty space, effectively enlarging the canvas. This guide provides a straightforward walkthrough on enabling this feature, expanding your crop boundaries beyond the original image borders, and confirming the operation to resize your canvas.
Step 1: Select the Crop Tool
Open your image in GIMP and activate the Crop tool. You can do this by clicking the Crop Tool icon in the Toolbox, selecting Tools > Transform Tools > Crop from the top menu, or pressing the keyboard shortcut Shift + C.
Step 2: Enable "Allow Growing"
Look at the Tool Options panel, which is typically docked beneath the main Toolbox on the left side of the screen. Scroll down through the tool settings to find the checkbox labeled Allow growing and check it.
Step 3: Drag Boundaries Outside the Canvas
Click and drag over your image to create an initial crop box. Once the crop box is active, click and drag the handles on the edges or corners outward past the borders of your original image into the surrounding empty workspace. With "Allow growing" enabled, the tool allows you to expand the selection infinitely beyond the original layer boundaries.
Step 4: Confirm the Crop
Once the bounding box matches your desired size, press the Enter key or click directly inside the crop area. GIMP will immediately expand the canvas to match the boundaries you defined. Any space extending past the original image will appear as transparent space on transparent layers, or will be filled with your current background color if working on an image without an alpha channel.
