How to Tear Off Menus in GIMP
GIMP allows users to streamline their graphic editing workflow by tearing off menus and sub-menus into independent floating windows. This guide outlines the exact procedure for detaching these menus so they remain persistently open and accessible anywhere on your desktop, reducing repetitive clicks during intensive editing tasks.
Procedure to Tear Off Sub-Menus
Locate the Menu or Sub-Menu
Open GIMP and click on the parent menu item (such as File, Select, Layer, or Filters) to expand its dropdown options. If targeting a nested sub-menu, hover over the relevant item until the secondary menu appears.Identify the Tear-Off Indicator
Look at the very top of the expanded menu or sub-menu. You will see a thin, horizontal dashed or dotted line located directly above the first command.Detach the Menu
Click directly on the dashed line. The menu will instantly detach from the main interface and transform into an independent floating window on your desktop.Position the Floating Window
Click and drag the title bar of the new floating window to place it anywhere on your screen. The commands within this window remain fully functional, allowing you to access tools with a single click without navigating the menu bar repeatedly.Close the Detached Menu
When you no longer need the floating menu, click the standard window close button (X) on its title bar. This will remove the floating window without affecting the standard menus in the main GIMP interface.
Note: Tear-off menu functionality depends on the underlying GTK toolkit. If the dashed line does not appear at the top of the menu, the feature may be disabled by your operating system's window manager or your specific GIMP version settings.
