How to Switch Crop Orientation in GIMP

When cropping images in GIMP with a locked aspect ratio, you may need to quickly toggle between landscape (horizontal) and portrait (vertical) framing. This guide explains how to switch the crop orientation using the built-in orientation buttons in the Tool Options dock or by manually swapping the aspect ratio dimensions.

Method 1: Use the Orientation Buttons in Tool Options

  1. Activate the Crop Tool: Select the Crop Tool from the Toolbox or press Shift + C.
  2. Open Tool Options: Ensure the Tool Options dockable dialog is visible (if missing, go to Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Tool Options).
  3. Lock the Aspect Ratio: Check the Fixed box and ensure the dropdown menu next to it is set to Aspect ratio.
  4. Toggle Orientation: Directly below or beside the aspect ratio input field, look for two orientation buttons:
    • Click the Portrait icon (vertical rectangle) to set a vertical crop.
    • Click the Landscape icon (horizontal rectangle) to set a horizontal crop.
  5. Apply the Crop: Click and drag on your canvas to define the crop area, then press Enter to finalize the crop.

Method 2: Manually Invert the Ratio Values

If you prefer using the keyboard, you can switch orientation by changing the numbers in the aspect ratio field:

  1. Click inside the text box under the Fixed option.
  2. Invert the current numbers. For example, if the ratio is set to 16:9 (landscape), type 9:16 to switch to portrait.
  3. Press Enter to apply the new orientation to your crop box.
