How to Stroke a Path with a Brush in GIMP?
Stroking a path with a specific brush in GIMP allows you to apply stylized, dynamic textures and shapes along a vector line rather than just a flat, solid color. This technique is essential for digital artists and graphic designers who want to create clean line art, custom borders, or complex dashed effects. By drawing a precise vector path first, you can instruct GIMP to automatically trace that path using any brush from your active collection, giving you complete control over the pressure, spacing, and brush dynamics of the stroke.
Step 1: Create Your Vector Path
Before you can stroke a path, you need to define the line or shape you want GIMP to trace.
- Select the Paths Tool from the toolbox (or press the B key).
- Click on your canvas to place anchor points and create your desired shape or line.
- Adjust the curves by dragging the control handles if necessary.
- Open the Paths Dialog tab (usually grouped with the Layers tab) to see your newly created path.
Step 2: Choose and Configure Your Brush
GIMP will use your currently active brush settings to paint the path. You must set these up before activating the stroke command.
- Select the Paintbrush Tool (or press the P key) from the toolbox.
- Open the Brushes Dialog and select the specific brush texture or shape you want to use.
- In the Tool Options panel, adjust the Size, Aspect Ratio, and Angle of the brush to fit your project’s needs.
- Choose a Foreground Color from the color palette, as this will be the color applied to the stroke.
- Optional: Adjust the Dynamics setting if you want the brush to mimic real-world pen pressure, fading, or color variations along the path.
Step 3: Stroke the Path
Once your path is drawn and your brush is configured, you are ready to apply the paint.
- Go to the Paths Dialog tab.
- Right-click on the path you want to paint and select Stroke Path… from the context menu. (Alternatively, you can go to the top menu and select Edit > Stroke Path…).
- In the pop-up window that appears, select the Stroke with a paint tool option.
- Ensure that Paint tool: is set to Paintbrush in the dropdown menu.
- If you configured brush dynamics (like pressure fading), check the box next to Emulate brush dynamics.
- Click the Stroke button at the bottom of the window.
GIMP will immediately render the brush style along the exact trajectory of your vector path.
