How to Solo a Layer in GIMP with One Click

When working with complex, multi-layered projects in GIMP, you often need to isolate a single layer to inspect your work or make precise adjustments without visual clutter. Instead of manually clicking the visibility icon for every individual layer, GIMP includes a built-in shortcut that allows you to "solo" any layer with a single click. This guide explains how to instantly hide all other layers and how to restore your original layer visibility just as quickly.

The Single-Click Shortcut to Solo a Layer

To isolate one layer and hide every other layer in your document:

  1. Open the Layers panel on the right side of your workspace (if it is closed, press Ctrl + L to open it).
  2. Locate the specific layer you want to isolate.
  3. Hold down the Shift key on your keyboard.
  4. Left-click the eye icon next to that layer.

All other layers will immediately become hidden, leaving only your chosen layer visible on the canvas.

How to Restore Layer Visibility

GIMP remembers the visibility state of your layers before you soloed one. To return your document to its previous state:

  1. Hold down the Shift key.
  2. Left-click the eye icon of the soloed layer once again.

All layers that were visible before will reappear, while any layers you intentionally kept hidden beforehand will remain invisible.

Why Use the Solo Shortcut?

  • Focus on Details: Isolating a layer removes overlapping blending modes, masks, and adjustments so you can inspect artifacts, edges, or fine details.
  • Speed Up Workflow: Manually toggling dozens of layers wastes time and increases the risk of forgetting which layers were supposed to stay hidden.
  • A/B Testing: Quickly toggling between a soloed layer and the full composition makes it simple to compare your changes against the entire image.
