How to Soft-Proof for Coated Offset in GIMP
Soft-proofing allows digital artists and designers to simulate how high-saturation, vibrant RGB colors will reproduce on physical CMYK print media directly within GIMP. This guide covers how to obtain the correct standard ICC profile for coated offset paper, configure GIMP's color management settings, toggle the soft-proof display, and inspect out-of-gamut colors to ensure accurate print results.
1. Obtain a Coated Offset ICC Profile
GIMP works internally in RGB, so accurate print simulation requires an external CMYK ICC profile designed for standard commercial offset presses:
- Europe / International: Download ISO Coated v2 (ECI) or PSO Coated v3 from the European Color Initiative (ECI) website.
- North America: Download GRACoL 2006 Coated1v2 or GRACoL 2013 from IDEAlliance.
Download the profile file (.icc or .icm)
and save it to your local system's default color profile directory or an
easily accessible folder.
2. Configure Color Management in Preferences
To set the default soft-proofing behavior across GIMP:
- Go to Edit > Preferences.
- In the left sidebar, select Color Management.
- Set Image display mode to Color-managed display.
- Set your Monitor profile to your calibrated monitor's profile (or leave it as system default if calibrated via your operating system).
- Locate the Soft-proofing profile field, click the
dropdown, choose Select color profile from disk..., and
select your downloaded coated offset profile (e.g.,
ISOcoated_v2_eci.iccorGRACoL2006_Coated1v2.icc). - Set the Rendering intent for soft-proofing to Relative Colorimetric (standard for graphic design preserving in-gamut relationships) or Perceptual (often preferred for photographs).
- Enable Black point compensation to map dark shadows appropriately.
- Customize the Out of gamut color marker (a vibrant, contrasting color like magenta or bright cyan works best) if you want visual clipping indicators.
- Click OK to save settings.
3. Enable Soft-Proofing in the Active Window
Once configured, soft-proofing must be toggled on for your active image:
- Open your image in GIMP.
- In the top menu, go to View > Color Management.
- Check Soft-Proof.
The screen preview will instantly shift, desaturating any tones that exceed the maximum ink limits or gamut volume of standard coated offset lithography.
4. Inspect and Adjust High-Saturation Colors
Highly saturated RGB tones—especially vivid cyans, pure greens, and neon magentas—frequently fall outside the physical ink capabilities of offset coated papers.
- Go to View > Color Management and check Mark Out of Gamut Colors.
- Any pixels that cannot be accurately printed will be highlighted in the out-of-gamut alert color defined in your preferences.
- Use adjustment layers or tools such as Colors > Hue-Chroma, Colors > Curves, or Colors > Exposure to bring oversaturated hues back into gamut manually.
- Fine-tune your adjustments until the clipping highlights disappear or visually blend cleanly under the soft-proof preview.
