How to Select Multiple Layers in GIMP
Modern GIMP provides native multi-layer selection within the Layers dockable dialog, allowing users to select, transform, group, and organize multiple layers simultaneously. This guide explains how to use standard keyboard modifiers to select multiple layers in the Layers panel and outlines the core batch operations you can execute once your layers are highlighted.
Selecting Multiple Layers
Selecting multiple layers in GIMP mirrors standard file-selection behavior used across modern operating systems:
- Contiguous Selection (Range): Click the first layer, hold down the Shift key, and click another layer further up or down the list. All layers between the two selections will be highlighted.
- Non-Contiguous Selection (Individual): Hold down the Ctrl key (or Cmd on macOS) and click individual layers anywhere in the stack to add or remove them from the active selection.
- Deselecting: Hold Ctrl (or Cmd) and click an already selected layer to remove it from the selection, or simply click any single layer without holding a modifier key to clear the multi-selection.
Selected layers appear highlighted in the Layers dialog, indicating they are all part of the active selection context.
Actions Supported on Multiple Layers
Once multiple layers are selected, a variety of batch actions can be performed directly from the Layers dialog or on the canvas:
- Reordering in the Stack: Click and drag any layer within the selected group to move all selected layers together up or down the layer hierarchy.
- Canvas Transformations: Using tools such as the Move, Rotate, Scale, or Shear tools will apply the transformation across all currently selected layers at the same time.
- Grouping: Right-click the selection and choose to group the layers, or drag the highlighted layers together into an existing Layer Group.
- Duplicating and Deleting: Pressing the Delete key or clicking the trash icon removes all selected layers simultaneously. Right-clicking and choosing to duplicate creates copies of all selected layers.
- Toggling Attributes: Shift-clicking or right-clicking to adjust layer properties—such as locking pixels or setting layer visibility—can be applied across the entire selection.
Native Selection vs. Legacy Layer Linking
In older versions of GIMP, manipulating multiple layers required clicking the chain icon next to each layer to "link" them. While layer linking is still accessible for specific workflows, native multi-layer selection replaces this mechanism for standard everyday editing, providing a faster, more intuitive way to manage complex layer structures.
