How to Rotate Around a Custom Pivot Point in GIMP

Rotating an object or layer around an off-center axis is a common task in graphic design, useful for creating circular patterns, clock hands, or swinging animations. In GIMP, the Rotate Tool allows you to freely move the rotation center anywhere on the canvas, even far outside the active layer's physical boundaries. This guide explains how to set an external pivot point and perform the rotation cleanly.

Step 1: Select the Layer and the Rotate Tool

  1. In the Layers panel, click on the layer you want to rotate.
  2. Select the Rotate Tool from the Toolbox, or press the keyboard shortcut Shift + R.
  3. In the Tool Options dock, check the Clipping setting. By default, it is set to "Adjust" or "Clip". If you do not want the rotated content to be cut off if it swings outside the original canvas dimensions, set Clipping to Adjust.

Step 2: Display the Rotation Handles

Click anywhere on the layer inside the image window. A grid overlay will appear over the layer, accompanied by a small circle with a crosshair in the exact center. This crosshair represents the pivot point (center of rotation). A floating Rotate dialog box will also appear on your screen.

Step 3: Move the Pivot Point Outside the Layer Boundary

  1. Hover your cursor directly over the small circle at the center of the layer until the cursor changes to a hand or move icon.
  2. Click and hold the left mouse button, then drag the pivot point away from the center and release it anywhere on the canvas outside the layer boundary.
  3. If you need pixel-perfect placement, look at the floating Rotate dialog box. Enter the exact coordinates into the Center X and Center Y fields instead of dragging manually.

Step 4: Rotate the Layer

  1. Click anywhere outside the pivot point on the canvas and drag your mouse to rotate the layer around your new external axis. You can also type a specific degree value directly into the Angle field in the Rotate dialog.
  2. Once the layer is aligned as desired, press Enter or click the Rotate button in the dialog to apply the transformation.
