How to Replace Brand Colors Using Color Exchange in GIMP

Replacing a specific corporate brand color throughout an image is an essential task during rebranding, marketing refreshes, or digital asset maintenance. This guide details how to locate and utilize GIMP's Color Exchange tool to precisely detect an existing source color, map it to a new corporate hex value, and fine-tune detection thresholds to ensure clean, artifact-free replacement across your composition.

1. Identify Your Colors

Before opening the tool, ensure you have the exact values for both the current brand color and the replacement color:

  • Select the Color Picker Tool (O) from the Toolbox.
  • Click on the original brand color in your image to sample it. Note its Hex code or RGB values in the tool options.
  • Have your new target corporate color code (Hex or RGB) ready.

If the original brand color appears in elements you do not wish to alter (such as skin tones, backgrounds, or incidental objects), make a selection first:

  • Use the Fuzzy Select Tool (U), Select by Color Tool (Shift + O), or Free Select Tool (F) to outline the regions containing the brand assets you want to change.
  • If the color replacement applies universally across the entire canvas, you can skip this step.

3. Open the Color Exchange Tool

With your layer selected in the Layers panel:

  • Navigate to the top menu and select Colors > Map > Color Exchange...
  • A dialog window will appear featuring preview controls, "From color" (source) options, "To color" (destination) options, and threshold sliders.

4. Configure the "From" and "To" Colors

  • Under the From color section, click the color swatch. Enter the Hex code or RGB values of the original brand color sampled in Step 1, or use the eyedropper within the dialog to select it directly from the preview pane.
  • Under the To color section, click the color swatch and input the Hex code or RGB values of your new corporate brand color.

5. Fine-Tune Thresholds and Lock Channels

Digital assets often contain anti-aliasing, subtle gradients, or compression artifacts that create slight variations in the brand color:

  • Locate the Thresholds section. You can adjust the Red, Green, and Blue thresholds independently, or check Lock thresholds to scale them uniformly.
  • Slowly increase the threshold values while monitoring the preview. Raising the threshold expands the range of matching shades to cover anti-aliased edge pixels.
  • Keep the threshold low enough to prevent the new color from bleeding into unrelated neighboring areas.

6. Apply the Exchange

  • Verify the results in the real-time preview window.
  • Click OK to execute the color replacement.
  • Deselect any active selections by pressing Ctrl + Shift + A (or Cmd + Shift + A on macOS) and inspect the final image at 100% zoom to ensure edges remain crisp.
