How to Remove Yellowing from Scans in GIMP
Aged documents often develop a yellow or sepia tint over time due to paper oxidation, which can reduce readability and make scanned files look dirty. GIMP offers several straightforward methods to eliminate this discoloration, ranging from quick white point adjustments using the Levels tool to precise tone adjustments using Curves and Grayscale conversion. This guide covers the most effective techniques to restore yellowed scanned documents into crisp, clean, and legible digital files.
Method 1: Using the Levels Tool (Quickest and Most Effective)
The Levels tool allows you to redefine what is considered pure white in your image, automatically neutralizing the yellow background across the entire document.
- Open your document: Go to File > Open and select your scanned document.
- Open the Levels dialogue: Navigate to Colors > Levels... in the top menu bar.
- Use the White Point Eyedropper:
- In the Levels window, locate the three eyedropper icons under All Channels.
- Click the Pick white point for all channels eyedropper (the rightmost dropper icon).
- Click on a representative area of the yellowed paper background that contains no text. The yellow tint will instantly shift to pure white.
- Fine-tune the contrast:
- Look at the Input Levels histogram.
- Drag the black slider (left) slightly inward to make faded text darker and sharper.
- Drag the white slider (right) slightly inward to eliminate any remaining background noise or faint spots.
- Drag the gray slider (middle) left or right to balance midtone legibility.
- Click OK to apply the changes.
Method 2: Grayscale Conversion and Curves (For Black-and-White Text)
If the document does not contain colored stamps, signatures, or photos, converting it to grayscale simplifies the cleanup process by removing all color information.
- Convert to Grayscale:
- Go to Image > Mode > Grayscale. This instantly removes the yellow hue, turning the discoloration into light gray tones.
- Open the Curves tool:
- Go to Colors > Curves....
- Adjust the tonal curve:
- Click near the top-right portion of the diagonal line and drag it upward to push light gray background tones into pure white.
- Click near the bottom-left portion of the line and drag it downward to darken the text.
- This creates a slight "S-curve" that maximizes contrast between the text and the paper.
- Click OK to confirm.
Method 3: Preserving Colored Ink and Stamps
If the document contains blue ink signatures or colored official stamps that must be preserved:
- Go to Colors > Hue-Saturation....
- Select the Y (Yellows) radio button at the top.
- Drag the Saturation slider all the way to
-100to drain the color from only the yellowed paper. - Increase the Lightness slider until the background brightens to near-white.
- Click OK.
- Follow up with Colors > Levels... to fine-tune the remaining contrast without damaging non-yellow colored elements.
Exporting the Cleaned Document
Once the background is clean and the text is sharp:
- Go to File > Export As....
- Choose your preferred format (e.g.,
.pngfor sharp digital viewing or.pdffor multi-page documents). - Click Export to save your restored document.
