How to Remove All Guides in GIMP

Guides are an essential tool in GIMP for precise alignment, measurement, and layout design, but having too many active on your canvas can quickly clutter your workspace. Instead of manually dragging each individual guide off the screen, GIMP includes a built-in feature that clears them all simultaneously. This article explains how to instantly clear your canvas by deleting every guide in a single click using the GIMP Image menu.

Steps to Remove All Guides

To remove every guide currently placed on your canvas, follow these steps:

  1. Look at the top menu bar of the GIMP interface with your project open.
  2. Click on the Image menu.
  3. Move your cursor down to hover over the Guides submenu.
  4. Click on Remove all Guides.

All horizontal and vertical guides will immediately disappear from your canvas.

Temporarily Hiding Guides

If you do not want to permanently delete your guides, you can hide them from view instead:

  • Go to View > uncheck Show Guides.
  • Alternatively, use the default keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + T (or Cmd + Shift + T on macOS).

Using the hide function allows you to clear visual clutter while preserving your alignment layout for later use. If you are entirely finished with your layout structure, using Image > Guides > Remove all Guides remains the fastest way to reset your workspace.
