How to Make Double-Border Sticker Cutlines in GIMP
Creating a double-border sticker cutline around an isolated design in GIMP involves generating concentric selections, filling them on separate layers, and converting the final boundaries into vector paths suitable for vinyl cutters. This guide walks through the exact steps to expand selections around your transparent artwork, generate the inner offset and outer cutline, and export the resulting vector paths for clean vinyl plotting.
1. Prepare Your Subject
Open your extracted subject in GIMP. Ensure the background is transparent. If your layer does not have an alpha channel, right-click the layer in the Layers panel and select Add Alpha Channel.
2. Create the Inner Border
- Right-click your subject's layer in the Layers panel and select Alpha to Selection.
- Go to Select > Grow. Enter the desired thickness for your inner border (for example, 15 to 30 pixels depending on resolution) and click OK.
- Create a new layer below the subject layer by clicking the New Layer icon, naming it "Inner Border", and setting the fill to Transparency.
- With the "Inner Border" layer selected, set your foreground color
(typically white) and fill the selection using Edit > Fill
with FG Color (or
Ctrl + ,).
3. Create the Outer Border
- Keep the current selection active, or right-click the "Inner Border" layer and choose Alpha to Selection.
- Go to Select > Grow again. Enter the thickness for the secondary outer border (e.g., 10 to 20 pixels) and click OK.
- Create another new layer positioned at the bottom of the layer stack and name it "Outer Border".
- Fill this selection with your chosen secondary border color using Edit > Fill with FG Color.
- Deselect the active area by going to Select >
None (
Shift + Ctrl + A).
4. Generate the Plotter Cutline Paths
Vinyl plotters require vector paths rather than raster pixels to guide the blade.
- Right-click the "Outer Border" layer (or the layer you intend to be the final cut edge) and choose Alpha to Selection.
- Go to Select > To Path. This converts the boundary of the selection into a vector cutline.
- Switch to the Paths tab (next to the Layers tab).
Double-click the newly generated path and rename it according to your
plotter's specifications (e.g.,
CutContourorDieCut). - If your workflow requires a secondary kiss-cut line between the
inner and outer borders, right-click the "Inner Border" layer, choose
Alpha to Selection, go to Select > To
Path, and rename that path (e.g.,
KissCut).
5. Export the Vector Cutline for Plotting
- In the Paths tab, right-click your cutline path and select Export Path....
- Choose your export destination, name the file, ensure the extension
is set to
.svg, and click Save. - Export your printed artwork separately by turning off any cutline display layers and going to File > Export As... to save the artwork as a high-resolution PNG, TIFF, or PDF.
Import both the SVG path and the raster artwork into your vinyl cutting software (such as Inkscape, Roland VersaWorks, or Silhouette Studio) to align the cutline with the print.
