How to Lock Paths in GIMP to Prevent Editing
This article explains how to lock vector paths in GIMP to prevent accidental node editing, movement, or deformation while working on complex painting tasks. By securing your paths through the dedicated lock features in the Paths dialog, you can freely paint, blend, and manipulate canvas layers without disrupting your vector outlines.
Using the Paths Dialog to Lock Path Position and Size
The primary method to prevent accidental node editing in GIMP is utilizing the "Lock position and size" toggle within the Paths dockable dialog.
- Open the Paths Dialog by navigating to Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Paths if it is not already visible in your workspace.
- In the list of paths, click on the path you want to protect to make it active.
- Locate the Lock options situated directly above the list of paths.
- Click the Lock position and size icon (represented by a four-directional arrow icon next to a padlock).
Once enabled, this lock prevents the Paths Tool from moving, adding, deleting, or adjusting any anchors or control handles on that specific path.
Hiding Path Visibility During Painting
If you want an extra layer of protection and need to clear your canvas view while painting:
- Locate the eye icon next to the path’s name in the Paths Dialog.
- Click the eye icon to toggle visibility off.
Hiding a path completely removes the visible vector outline from the canvas, ensuring that paint strokes, selections, and transformation tools cannot interact with or accidentally select the nodes.
Unlocking the Path for Future Adjustments
When you finish painting and need to modify the vector outline again:
- Return to the Paths Dialog.
- Select the locked path from the list.
- Click the Lock position and size icon again to deactivate the lock.
- Click the space where the eye icon was to restore visibility on the canvas.
