How to Lock Layer Position and Size in GIMP
When working on complex multi-layer graphic designs or photo manipulations in GIMP, it is easy to accidentally nudge, shift, or resize a background element or finished layer. GIMP includes a dedicated layer-locking feature that freezes a layer's spatial coordinates and dimensions. This guide outlines how to locate and enable the position and size lock in GIMP's interface to safeguard your composition workflow.
Steps to Lock Layer Position and Size
Open the Layers Dialog
Ensure the Layers panel is visible. If it is hidden, display it by pressing Ctrl + L (or Cmd + L on macOS), or by navigating to Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Layers in the top menu.Select the Layer
Click on the specific layer you want to protect from being moved or resized in the layer list.Enable the Position and Size Lock
At the top of the Layers dialog, locate the row of icons labeled Lock:. Click the icon that looks like a four-way directional arrow (crosshair with arrows).
Once clicked, the icon will highlight, indicating that the layer's position and size are locked.
What This Setting Prevents
With the position and size lock active:
- The Move Tool (M) will not be able to drag the layer across the canvas.
- Transformation tools—such as Scale (Shift + S), Rotate (Shift + R), Shear (Shift + H), and Perspective (Shift + P)—are disabled for that specific layer.
- You can still paint on the layer, apply filters, and edit its contents unless you also toggle the Lock pixels (paintbrush icon) setting.
How to Unlock the Layer
To regain the ability to reposition or transform the layer, simply select the layer in the Layers dialog and click the highlighted four-way arrow icon again to disable the lock.
