How to Link Multiple Layers in GIMP
Linking multiple independent layers in GIMP allows you to move, scale, rotate, and transform separate visual elements simultaneously without having to merge them into a single layer. This guide covers the two primary methods to group and synchronize layer transforms in GIMP: using the built-in Layer Link feature (the chain icon) and using Layer Groups.
Method 1: Using the Layer Link Feature
The Layer Link feature binds distinct layers together for transform operations while keeping their blend modes, positions, and identities intact.
- Open the Layers Dialog: Ensure your Layers dockable dialog is visible by pressing Ctrl + L (or Cmd + L on macOS) if it is not already open.
- Locate the Link Area: Look at the space directly between the eye icon (visibility) and the layer thumbnail preview for each layer.
- Activate the Link: Click in that empty space next to each layer you want to connect. A chain icon will appear.
- Link Additional Layers: Repeat this click on every other layer you wish to include in the group.
- Apply the Transformation:
- Select any transform tool from the Toolbox (e.g., Move
Tool (
M), Scale Tool (Shift + S), or Unified Transform Tool (Shift + T). - For the Move Tool, ensure the tool options are set to Move the active layer to prevent accidentally picking an unlinked layer.
- Click and drag on any one of the linked layers in the canvas. All linked layers will scale, translate, or rotate together as a single unified entity.
- Select any transform tool from the Toolbox (e.g., Move
Tool (
- Unlink Layers: When finished, click each chain icon again to disable the link.
Method 2: Using Layer Groups
Layer Groups act as folders that permanently bundle multiple layers together, allowing you to transform the entire collection at once.
- Create a Layer Group: In the Layers dialog, click the Create a new layer group icon (folder icon) at the bottom.
- Add Layers to the Group: Drag and drop the independent layers into the newly created group folder.
- Select the Group: Click on the group folder itself in the Layers dialog so it is highlighted as the active layer.
- Transform the Group: Select your desired tool (such as Scale or Move) and apply the transformation to the canvas. Every layer inside the group will scale and reposition proportionally.
