How to Isolate a Single Layer in GIMP
When working on complex graphic design or photo retouching projects in GIMP, managing dozens of active layers can quickly become overwhelming. This guide explains the exact keyboard shortcut and modifier key needed to isolate a single layer—hiding every other layer instantly—and how to restore your previous visibility state when you are finished.
The Modifier Key: Shift
The modifier key used to isolate a single layer in GIMP is the Shift key.
By using Shift in combination with a mouse click, you activate GIMP's "solo" visibility feature.
How to Isolate a Layer Step-by-Step
- Open the Layers Dialog dockable window (press
Ctrl + Lif it is not currently visible). - Locate the layer you want to view on its own.
- Hold down the Shift key on your keyboard.
- Left-click the Eye icon (visibility toggle) next to the chosen layer.
Instantly, all other layers in your project will be hidden, leaving only your selected layer visible on the canvas.
How to Restore All Layers
To return your project to its previous state:
- Hold down the Shift key again.
- Left-click the Eye icon of the currently visible layer.
GIMP remembers which layers were hidden and which were visible before you isolated the layer, restoring your exact prior configuration rather than just turning every layer on indiscriminately.
