How to Import Illustrator Paths into GIMP

Transferring vector paths from Adobe Illustrator to GIMP allows you to manipulate outlines, create precise selections, and stroke paths inside an open-source raster workflow. You can bring vector paths into GIMP using two primary techniques: saving and loading an SVG file through GIMP's Paths panel, or copying vector data directly to the clipboard and pasting it as a native GIMP path. Both methods retain the mathematical bezier curve data of your original Illustrator artwork rather than rasterizing it into pixels.

Method 1: Import Paths Using the File Loader (SVG)

Exporting your Illustrator vector work as an SVG file is the most reliable method for complex or multi-layered shapes.

Step 1: Export from Adobe Illustrator

  1. Open your project in Adobe Illustrator and select the vector paths you wish to export.
  2. Go to File > Save As... or File > Export > Export for Screens.
  3. Set the file format dropdown to **SVG (*.SVG)**.
  4. Choose your destination folder and click Save. In the SVG Options dialog, the default settings are typically sufficient; click OK.

Step 2: Load the Path into GIMP

  1. Open GIMP and open your target image or create a new canvas (File > New).
  2. Open the Paths dialog by going to Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Paths.
  3. Right-click anywhere in the empty space inside the Paths dockable dialog.
  4. Select Import Path... from the context menu.
  5. In the file browser, locate the SVG file you exported from Illustrator.
  6. Check the box labeled Merge imported paths if you want multi-segment shapes combined into a single path entry, or leave it unchecked to keep distinct paths separate.
  7. Click Open. Your Illustrator vector paths will now appear in GIMP's Paths list.

Method 2: Import Paths via the Clipboard

If you are working quickly and only need a few simple paths, you can use your operating system's clipboard without generating a temporary file.

Step 1: Copy from Adobe Illustrator

  1. In Adobe Illustrator, select the vector objects or paths using the Selection Tool (V) or Direct Selection Tool (A).
  2. Ensure Illustrator is configured to copy SVG data to the clipboard:
    • Go to Edit > Preferences > Clipboard Handling (Windows) or Illustrator > Preferences > Clipboard Handling (macOS).
    • Check the box labeled Include SVG Code.
  3. Press Ctrl + C (Windows) or Cmd + C (macOS) to copy the selected paths.

Step 2: Paste as a Path in GIMP

  1. Switch to GIMP with your project canvas active.
  2. Go to the Paths dialog (Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Paths).
  3. Right-click inside the list area of the Paths panel.
  4. Select Paste Path from the menu.
  5. The vector path will immediately generate inside the Paths list, retaining its original anchor points and curves.

Working with the Imported Path in GIMP

Once your paths appear in GIMP's Paths dialog:

  • Make Path Visible: Click the eye icon toggle next to the path name to display the outline on your canvas.
  • Edit Path: Select the Paths Tool (B) from the toolbox and click on the canvas path to adjust anchor points and handles.
  • Convert to Selection: Click the Path to Selection button at the bottom of the Paths dialog, or press Shift + V, to turn the vector outline into a raster selection.
  • Stroke Path: Click Stroke Path... at the bottom of the Paths dialog to automatically paint along the imported vector lines using a solid color, pattern, or paint tool.
