How to Flip Text on a Circular Path in GIMP

When mapping text along the lower arc of a circular path in GIMP, the characters naturally render upside-down because they follow the intrinsic vector direction of the path. This guide provides a straightforward method to reverse the path direction using GIMP's built-in tools, ensuring that bottom-aligned text remains upright, readable, and oriented from left to right.

Why Lower Path Text Appears Upside-Down

Vector paths have a designated start point, end point, and direction. By default, GIMP aligns the baseline of text along the path in the direction the path was drawn. On the lower half of a standard clockwise circular path, this direction travels right-to-left, which forces glyphs to display upside-down and backwards relative to the viewer.

How to Prevent and Fix Inverted Text

To make text read correctly along the bottom of a circle, the path's direction must be reversed prior to running the text-to-path command.

Step 1: Prepare the Text and Circular Path

  1. Create your circular path using the Ellipse Select Tool and converting the selection via Select > To Path.
  2. Type your text on a new layer using the Text Tool, ensuring the font, size, and letter spacing are finalized.

Step 2: Reverse the Path Direction

  1. Select the Flip Tool from the Toolbox (shortcut: Shift + F).
  2. In the Tool Options panel on the left, locate the Transform row.
  3. Click the Path icon (the small curved line with nodes) to ensure the tool manipulates the path rather than a layer or selection.
  4. Set the Flip Type to Horizontal.
  5. Click directly on the circular path in your canvas window. Flipping the path horizontally reverses its vector trajectory while keeping a symmetrical circle in the exact same position.

Step 3: Align the Text to the Path

  1. Go to the Layers dialog and select your text layer.
  2. In the Tool Options of the Text Tool, click Text along Path (or right-click the text layer and choose Text along Path).
  3. GIMP will generate a new path containing the outlines of your text along the bottom of the circle, oriented upright and reading correctly from left to right.

Adjusting Text Position and Baseline

Because reversing the path places the text baseline on the opposite side of the line, the glyphs may sit inside the circle rather than outside it.

To fix this:

  • Before applying Text along Path: Increase the baseline offset in the Text Tool options toolbar to shift the characters outward.
  • Alternative method: Create a slightly smaller or larger concentric circular path specifically sized for the lower text, allowing both top and bottom text segments to align at consistent radial distances.
