How to Flip Canvas View Horizontally in GIMP
Flipping your canvas horizontally is an essential technique for digital artists to spot proportional mistakes, perspective errors, and anatomical inconsistencies in their work. This article explains the exact keyboard shortcut used to mirror the canvas view non-destructively in GIMP, how to navigate to the feature via the menu, and how to assign a custom hotkey if preferred.
The Default Shortcut Key
In GIMP 2.10 and later, the default keyboard shortcut to flip the canvas view horizontally is the exclamation point key:
- Shortcut:
!(typically accessed by pressingShift+1on standard US keyboards)
Pressing this key instantly mirrors your working view of the canvas
without altering your project's actual layers, pixels, or export data.
Pressing ! a second time flips the canvas view back to its
original orientation.
Accessing View Flip via the Menu
If you prefer using the mouse or want to confirm the orientation:
- Click on the View menu at the top of the window.
- Hover over Flip & Rotate.
- Select Flip Horizontally.
A small flip indicator icon will also appear on the canvas ruler boundaries to notify you that the canvas is currently in a mirrored display state.
View Flip vs. Image Flip
It is important to distinguish between flipping the View and flipping the Image:
- View Flip (
View>Flip & Rotate>Flip Horizontally): Non-destructive. It functions like looking at your canvas in a physical mirror. When you save or export your artwork, it remains in its original orientation. - Image Flip (
Image>Transform>Flip Horizontally): Destructive. It permanently modifies the coordinates and orientation of every layer in your project.
Always ensure you are using the View option when checking drawing proportions.
How to Customize the Shortcut
If the default ! shortcut is inconvenient for your
workflow, you can rebind it to a single key:
- Go to Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts.
- In the search bar at the top, type
Flip Horizontally. - Locate the entry under the View category (ensure it
is under
Viewand notImageorLayer). - Click on the shortcut field next to the action, press the new key combination you wish to use, and click Save.
