How to Fix Barrel Distortion in GIMP

Wide-angle lenses frequently introduce barrel distortion, causing straight lines near the edges of a photo to appear bowed outward. This guide outlines the exact, step-by-step process to correct wide-angle barrel distortion using GIMP's built-in Lens Distortion filter, restoring straight architectural lines and natural perspectives quickly.

Step 1: Open the Image in GIMP

  1. Launch GIMP.
  2. Go to File > Open from the top menu, select your distorted image, and click Open.
  3. (Optional) Duplicate your background layer by pressing Shift + Ctrl + D (or right-clicking the layer in the Layers panel and choosing Duplicate Layer) to ensure you can revert changes if needed.

Step 2: Open the Lens Distortion Tool

  1. In the top menu bar, navigate to Filters.
  2. Hover over Distorts and click on Lens Distortion....
  3. A dialog box will appear with various adjustment sliders and a real-time preview of your image.

Step 3: Adjust the Sliders to Correct Distortion

  1. Main: This is the primary control for barrel distortion. Drag the Main slider to the left (negative values) to pull the bowed edges inward until the curved lines become straight.
  2. Edge: If the distortion is primarily near the outer perimeter rather than the center, adjust the Edge slider slightly to balance the correction across the frame.
  3. Zoom: Correcting barrel distortion often pulls the corners inward, revealing empty canvas space or stretching the corners. Adjust the Zoom slider to scale the image slightly and minimize transparent edges.
  4. Brighten: Wide-angle lenses sometimes cause vignetting (darkened corners). If your image has dark corners, adjust the Brighten slider to even out the exposure.

Step 4: Apply and Inspect the Changes

  1. Toggle the Preview checkbox on and off to compare your corrected image against the original.
  2. Once the vertical and horizontal lines appear straight, click OK to apply the filter.

Step 5: Crop and Export

  1. If the correction left transparent borders around your image, select the Crop Tool from the toolbox (or press Shift + C).
  2. Draw a crop box inside the visible image area to remove transparent borders and press Enter.
  3. Go to File > Export As..., choose your preferred file format (such as JPEG or PNG), and click Export.
