How to Extract Line Art in GIMP from a Coloring Book

Extracting line art from a physical coloring book allows you to digitize hand-drawn illustrations for digital coloring, archiving, or printing. This guide walks you through the step-by-step process of importing a scanned coloring page into GIMP, removing paper texture and background shadows using Levels, converting the white areas into a transparent layer using the Color to Alpha tool, and exporting a clean, isolated line drawing.

Step 1: Scan or Photograph the Page

Digitize the coloring book page using a flatbed scanner or a smartphone camera. If scanning, set the resolution to at least 300 DPI in grayscale or color mode. If using a camera, ensure the page is completely flat, evenly lit with natural light, and captured directly from above to avoid perspective distortion and harsh shadows.

Step 2: Open and Crop the Image in GIMP

  1. Open GIMP and go to File > Open to select your digitized image.
  2. Select the Crop Tool (Shift + C) from the toolbox.
  3. Drag a box around the specific illustration you want to extract to eliminate the page edges and book binding. Press Enter to crop.

Step 3: Convert the Image to Grayscale

Remove any unwanted paper tint or scanner color cast:

  1. Go to the top menu and select Image > Mode > Grayscale.
  2. Alternatively, go to Colors > Desaturate > Desaturate and select the Luminance mode, then click OK.

Step 4: Clean Up the Background with Levels

Adjusting the tonal range ensures the paper turns pure white and the lines become solid black.

  1. Go to Colors > Levels.
  2. In the Input Levels section, locate the three sliders below the histogram:
    • Drag the black point slider (left) toward the center to darken the lines.
    • Drag the white point slider (right) toward the center to turn the gray paper background pure white.
    • Fine-tune the gray midpoint slider (middle) to preserve thin or faint line details without introducing noise.
  3. Click OK once the background is clean white and the lines are crisp.

Step 5: Convert the White Background to Transparency

To isolate the line drawing so you can color beneath it, remove the white pixels:

  1. Go to the top menu and select Colors > Color to Alpha.
  2. Ensure the Color swatch is set to pure white (#FFFFFF). GIMP defaults to white automatically.
  3. The preview will show a checkerboard pattern behind the black lines, indicating that all white and off-white pixels have been converted to transparency.
  4. Click OK.

Step 6: Clean Up Stray Marks

  1. Select the Eraser Tool (Shift + E) from the toolbox.
  2. Zoom in using the + key and erase any leftover scanner dust, stray pencil marks, or unwanted paper texture artifacts.
  3. If any line segments are broken or faded, switch to the Paintbrush Tool (P), set your foreground color to black, and fill in the gaps.

Step 7: Export the Transparent Line Art

To preserve the transparent background for digital painting:

  1. Go to File > Export As.
  2. Name your file and ensure the extension is set to .png (e.g., line_art.png).
  3. Click Export, leave the default PNG settings, and click Export again.
