How to Export SVG Paths in GIMP

GIMP is primarily a raster image editor, but it includes robust vector path tools that allow you to create and export scalable vector graphics. This guide provides a quick, step-by-step walkthrough on how to export vector paths directly from GIMP into standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) files that can be used in dedicated vector software like Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator, or directly on the web.

Step 1: Create or Select Your Path

  1. Select the Paths Tool from the Toolbox or press the shortcut key B.
  2. Draw your vector path on the canvas by clicking to create anchor points and dragging to create Bézier curves.
  3. If you already have a selection you want to convert into a vector, go to the top menu and select Select > To Path.

Step 2: Open the Paths Dialog

  1. Locate the Paths tab in your dockable dialogs panel (usually grouped alongside the Layers and Channels tabs).
  2. If the tab is missing, open it by navigating to Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Paths.
  3. You will see a list of all paths present in your current project. Click on the path you want to export to highlight it.

Step 3: Export the Path to SVG

  1. Right-click the desired path inside the Paths dialog list.
  2. Select Export Path... from the context menu.
  3. In the export window that appears, choose the destination folder on your computer.
  4. Type a name for your file in the Name field and ensure it ends with the .svg extension (for example, vector-path.svg).
  5. Click the Save button to export the SVG file directly to your disk.

Exporting Multiple Paths at Once

If your project contains multiple paths that you want in a single SVG file:

  1. Make sure all the paths you wish to export are visible by clicking the eye icon next to each path in the Paths dialog.
  2. Right-click anywhere in the empty space of the Paths dialog list.
  3. Select Export Path..., and check the option for Export all paths if prompted, or save the project's visible paths into a single SVG file.

Important Considerations

  • Path Outlines Only: GIMP exports vector geometry (lines, curves, and nodes). It does not export raster textures, layer effects, or raster fill colors within the SVG.
  • Compatibility: The generated SVG file uses standard W3C SVG formatting, making it fully compatible with any modern vector editor or web browser.
