How to Export Sun Rasterfile Images in GIMP

Exporting images to the legacy Sun Rasterfile (RAS) format is straightforward when using the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP). This guide provides a direct, step-by-step walkthrough on how to prepare, convert, and save your graphic assets into standard .ras files using GIMP's built-in export tools.

Step 1: Open Your Image in GIMP

  1. Launch GIMP.
  2. Go to File > Open in the top menu bar.
  3. Locate your image file on your computer and click Open.

Step 2: Prepare the Graphic Asset

The Sun Rasterfile format supports monochrome, grayscale, indexed, and full-color (RGB) images. If your design contains multiple transparent or adjustment layers:

  1. Ensure the final visual arrangement is correct.
  2. If necessary, you can merge your layers by navigating to Image > Flatten Image, although GIMP will automatically offer to flatten or handle layers that are unsupported by the target format during export.

Step 3: Open the Export Dialog

  1. Navigate to File > Export As... (or use the shortcut Shift + Ctrl + E on Windows/Linux, Shift + Cmd + E on macOS).
  2. The export window will appear.

Step 4: Choose the Sun Rasterfile Format

There are two ways to select the Sun Raster format:

  • Manual Extension: In the Name field at the top, change the file extension of your filename to .ras (e.g., image.ras).
  • Format Selector: Click the Select File Type (By Extension) dropdown menu at the bottom of the window, scroll down the alphabetical list, and select Sun Rasterfile image.

Step 5: Configure and Finalize Export

  1. Choose the destination folder on your drive.
  2. Click the Export button in the lower right corner.
  3. An Export Image as Sun Rasterfile dialog box will pop up, offering encoding options:
    • RLE (Run Length Encoding): Check this option to apply lossless compression, which reduces the file size without degrading image quality. Uncheck it if the target system specifically requires uncompressed raw raster data.
  4. Click Export to save the file.
