How to Expand Canvas from Center in GIMP

This guide explains how to resize your canvas symmetrically in GIMP so that new space is added evenly around your content rather than only to the bottom or right edges. By using the positioning controls inside GIMP’s Canvas Size dialog, you can automatically center your original artwork and expand the canvas outward in all directions simultaneously.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Open the Canvas Size Dialog
    • With your project open in GIMP, click on the Image menu in the top toolbar.
    • Select Canvas Size... from the dropdown menu.
  2. Enter the New Dimensions
    • In the Canvas Size section at the top of the dialog, enter your desired Width and Height.
    • If you want to keep the current aspect ratio locked while scaling, make sure the chain-link icon next to the dimensions is linked. If you want custom dimensions, click the chain icon to unlink it.
  3. Center the Content
    • Look for the Offset section located below the preview area.
    • Click the Center button.
    • Clicking this button automatically calculates the required X and Y offsets, placing your existing artwork directly in the middle of the new canvas area.
  4. Select Layer Behavior (Optional)
    • In the Layers section at the bottom of the dialog, set how you want existing layers to behave via the Resize layers dropdown:
      • None: Only the canvas expands; existing layers retain their current sizes.
      • All layers: Expands all existing layers to match the new canvas size.
      • Image-sized layers: Expands only layers that matched the original canvas dimensions.
  5. Apply the Resize
    • Click the Resize button at the bottom right of the dialog.

Your canvas will now expand outward uniformly from the center, leaving equal borders or margins around your original image.
