How to Enable Pressure Sensitive Opacity in GIMP

Configuring pressure-sensitive opacity in GIMP allows digital painters to control brush transparency based on how hard they press their graphics tablet stylus. This guide walks you through setting up your input device, accessing GIMP's Paint Dynamics settings, and mapping stylus pressure directly to brush opacity for smooth, natural blending.

Step 1: Enable Your Graphics Tablet in GIMP

Before configuring pressure settings, ensure GIMP recognizes your tablet:

  1. Open GIMP and navigate to Edit > Input Devices (or GIMP > Input Devices on macOS).
  2. Locate your drawing tablet or stylus pen in the device list.
  3. Set the Mode dropdown to Screen.
  4. Click Save and then Close.

Step 2: Select a Painting Tool

Choose a tool that supports dynamic opacity, such as the Paintbrush (P), Airbrush (A), or Ink tool from the Toolbox.

Step 3: Configure Paint Dynamics

  1. Look at the Tool Options dockable dialog (usually beneath the Toolbox on the left).
  2. Scroll down to find the Dynamics section.
  3. Click the icon next to the active dynamic to open the Dynamics selection list.
  4. Select a pre-configured dynamic such as Pressure Opacity or Dynamics Random. If you want a basic brush where pressure only controls transparency, Pressure Opacity works immediately.

Step 4: Create a Custom Dynamics Preset (Optional)

If you want fine-grained control or want to combine pressure opacity with size dynamics:

  1. Open the Paint Dynamics Editor by going to Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Paint Dynamics.
  2. Click the Create New Dynamics icon (the blank page icon at the bottom).
  3. In the matrix table, locate the Opacity row and the Pressure column.
  4. Check the box where Pressure and Opacity intersect.
  5. Uncheck other boxes if you only want pressure to affect opacity.
  6. Name your preset (e.g., "Custom Pressure Opacity") and select it from the Tool Options panel under the Dynamics dropdown.

Step 5: Test and Adjust

Draw on your canvas with varying stylus pressure. If the transition feels too harsh or too light, open Edit > Preferences > Input Devices and adjust the tablet pressure curve, or adjust the Opacity slider in the Tool Options panel to set the maximum opacity ceiling.
