How to Edit Path Anchor Points in GIMP?

Editing anchor points in GIMP allows you to reshape vector paths for precise selections, custom shapes, and complex digital artwork. This guide covers how to activate the Paths tool, select existing anchor points, move them, adjust their control handles, and add or delete points to fine-tune your vector lines.

Activating the Paths Tool and Selecting a Path

Before you can edit anchor points, you must make the existing path active and visible within your workspace.

Moving and Adjusting Anchor Points

Once the anchor points are visible, you can manipulate them to change the trajectory of the path. The Paths tool operates in different modes, which you can toggle in the Tool Options dock or by using keyboard shortcuts.

Moving an Anchor Point

To change the position of a specific vertex, ensure your tool mode is set to Design or Edit. Click and drag the anchor point to its new location. The connected path segments will automatically stretch and bend to follow the point.

Adjusting Control Handles (Bézier Curves)

When you click on an anchor point, directional lines with squares at the end—known as control handles—may appear.

Adding and Deleting Anchor Points

Refining a path often requires altering the total number of anchor points to gain more control or simplify the shape.

Adding New Anchor Points

To insert a new point onto an existing line segment, hold the Ctrl key (Windows) or Cmd key (Mac) and hover over the path line. The cursor will change to show a plus sign. Click anywhere on the line to place a new anchor point.

Deleting Anchor Points

To remove an unnecessary point and simplify your path, switch the tool mode to Edit in the Tool Options, or hold Shift+Ctrl (Windows) / Shift+Cmd (Mac) and click directly on the anchor point you wish to discard. The path will automatically reconnect between the remaining adjacent points.
