How to Duplicate Layer Group Hierarchy in GIMP
Managing complex multi-layered projects in GIMP often involves organizing assets into nested groups. This guide explains how to duplicate an entire nested layer group hierarchy in GIMP in a single, seamless operation, ensuring all child layers, subgroups, layer masks, and blend modes are preserved without requiring manual copying.
Duplicating the Hierarchy
In GIMP, layer groups function as containers. When you duplicate a parent group, GIMP automatically clones everything contained inside it, including deeply nested subgroups.
- Open the Layers Dialog: Ensure your Layers panel is visible by pressing Ctrl + L if it is not already open.
- Select the Root Group: Click on the top-level parent layer group that contains the nested hierarchy you want to copy.
- Execute the Duplicate Command: Perform the
duplication using any of the following methods:
- Icon: Click the Create a duplicate of the layer icon (represented by two overlapping squares) at the bottom of the Layers dialog.
- Context Menu: Right-click the parent layer group in the list and select Duplicate Layer.
- Keyboard Shortcut: Press Shift + Ctrl + D.
- Top Menu: Go to the application menu bar and click Layer > Duplicate Layer.
What Gets Copied
When the operation completes, a new top-level group labeled "[Group Name] copy" appears directly above the original. This single action duplicates:
- The parent layer group and its settings (opacity, blending mode, and visibility).
- Every nested subgroup in its exact hierarchical order.
- All individual raster, text, and vector layers within those subgroups.
- All associated layer masks, clipping settings, and layer effects.
Once duplicated, the new hierarchy acts completely independently of the original, allowing you to reposition, transform, or modify elements without affecting the initial structure.
