How to Disable Update Notifications in GIMP

This guide explains how to stop the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) from automatically checking for new versions and displaying update notifications on startup. By modifying a single setting within the GIMP Preferences menu, you can prevent these background network checks entirely, ensuring a faster startup and an uninterrupted workflow.

Steps to Turn Off GIMP Update Checks

  1. Open the Preferences Menu
    • On Windows or Linux: Click on Edit in the top menu bar and select Preferences.
    • On macOS: Click on GIMP in the top application menu and select Preferences.
  2. Navigate to System Resources
    • In the left sidebar of the Preferences dialog box, locate and click on System Resources.
  3. Disable the Update Check Option
    • Scroll down the right-hand pane to find the Network or Check for updates section.
    • Locate the checkbox labeled Check for updates to GIMP and release notes at startup.
    • Uncheck this box.
  4. Apply and Save Changes
    • Click the OK button at the bottom right of the Preferences window to save your changes.

GIMP will no longer query the internet for new releases when launching, stopping all automatic update notifications. If you wish to check for updates in the future, you can either re-enable this option or manually navigate to Help > About GIMP to verify your version.
