How to Disable Exif Data on JPEG Export in GIMP

When you take photos with a smartphone or digital camera, sensitive metadata such as precise GPS coordinates is embedded into the file. This guide explains how to disable the "Save Exif data" option in GIMP during the JPEG export process, ensuring all embedded location and device metadata is completely stripped from your exported image for privacy and security.

Steps to Disable Exif Data During JPEG Export

  1. Open the Export Menu
With your image open and ready in GIMP, go to the top menu and select File > Export As... (or press Shift + Ctrl + E).

  2. Select the File Format
Choose your destination folder, enter a file name ending in .jpg or .jpeg, or expand the Select File Type (By Extension) menu at the bottom and choose JPEG image. Click Export.

  3. Expand Advanced Options
The "Export Image as JPEG" dialog box will appear. If the detailed settings are not visible, click the plus sign (+) next to Advanced Options to expand the full list of parameters.

  4. Uncheck "Save Exif data"
Scroll through the options list and find the metadata checkboxes. Uncheck the box labeled Save Exif data. This action prevents GIMP from transferring camera settings, timestamps, and GPS location coordinates to the new JPEG.
(Tip: To ensure absolute privacy, you should also uncheck Save XMP data and Save IPTC data).

  5. Save as Default (Optional)
To prevent having to uncheck this box every time you export a file, click the Save Defaults button located near the bottom of the export dialog window. GIMP will remember your preference for all future JPEG exports.

  6. Finalize Export
Click the Export button at the bottom right. The resulting JPEG will be saved without any embedded Exif location data.
