How to Curve Text in GIMP?

Making text follow a curved path in GIMP is a powerful way to create dynamic logos, badges, and graphic designs. While GIMP doesn’t have a single-click “warp text” button like some other design software, the process is straightforward once you understand how to pair the Text Tool with the Paths Tool. By drawing a custom curve, applying your text to that curve, and converting it into a fillable shape, you can manipulate typography to fit any circular or wavy design you need.

Step 1: Create Your Design Canvas and Text

Open GIMP and create a new project by navigating to File > New. Select your preferred dimensions and click OK. Once your canvas is ready, select the Text Tool from the toolbox (the “A” icon) or press the T key. Click on your canvas, type out the phrase you want to curve, and use the text options menu to adjust the font, size, and formatting to your liking.

Step 2: Draw the Curved Path

To guide your text, you need to draw the line it will sit on. Select the Paths Tool from the toolbox (the fountain pen icon) or press the B key. Click once on the canvas to create your starting point, and then click a second time where you want the line to end. To turn this straight line into a curve, click and drag the middle of the line segment, or pull the control handles at either end until you achieve the desired shape.

Step 3: Map the Text to the Path

Look at your Layers dialog on the right side of the screen and ensure your text layer is selected. Right-click the text layer and select Text along Path from the context menu. You will instantly see an outline of your text wrap itself along the curve you drew. Keep in mind that this outline is just a path preview, not actual pixels, so you cannot paint or edit it just yet.

Step 4: Fill the Curved Text with Color

To turn the text outline into visible, solid lettering, you need to fill it. First, look at your Layers dialog and create a New Layer so your final text is on its own separate background. Next, navigate to the Paths tab (usually grouped next to the Layers tab) to see the new path created from your text. Right-click this text path and select Path to Selection, which will create a marching-ants outline around your curved letters. Finally, select your preferred color, grab the Bucket Fill Tool (Shift + B), and click inside the selection to fill your text.

Step 5: Clean Up Your Canvas

Once your curved text is filled, you will still see the original straight text layer and the red path lines on your screen. To clean up your workspace, switch back to the Layers tab and click the eye icon next to the original text layer to hide it. Then, go back to the Paths tab and click the eye icon next to your path layers to make them invisible. You are now left with perfectly curved, clean typography ready for your graphic design project.
