How to Convert Layers to Animation in GIMP

Converting a multi-layer composition into an animated frame sequence in GIMP is a straightforward process where each layer serves as an individual frame of animation. By organizing your layers sequentially, testing the motion with the built-in playback tool, optimizing the file size, and exporting with the proper animation settings, you can quickly turn static graphic layers into a smooth, playable animation or an animated GIF.

1. Order Your Layers

GIMP processes animation from the bottom layer upward.

  • Open your composition and open the Layers dialog (Ctrl + L).
  • Arrange the lowest layer as the first frame of your animation.
  • Place the subsequent frames in ascending order, with the final frame at the very top of the layer stack.

2. Set Frame Timing and Disposal (Optional)

You can control the duration and behavior of individual frames directly through layer names:

  • Double-click a layer's name to edit it.
  • Append the duration in milliseconds within parentheses, such as Frame 1 (100ms).
  • Specify the frame disposal method by adding (combine) to overlay the frame onto the previous one, or (replace) to clear the previous frame before displaying the new one (e.g., Frame 1 (100ms) (replace)).

3. Preview the Animation

Before exporting, verify the timing and motion:

  • Go to the top menu and select Filters > Animation > Playback...
  • In the playback window, click Play to review the animation.
  • Adjust the playback speed or step through frames individually to identify any pacing or visual errors.

4. Optimize the Frames

To reduce file size and remove redundant pixel data across frames:

  • Navigate to Filters > Animation > Optimize (for GIF).
  • GIMP will generate a new image window containing the optimized layers, applying the appropriate (combine) tags and cropping unchanging areas automatically.

5. Export the Animation

Once optimized, export the composition into an animated format:

  • Select File > Export As...
  • Choose a file name ending with the .gif extension (or select GIF Image from the file type menu).
  • Click Export to open the GIF Export configuration dialog.
  • Check the As Animation checkbox.
  • Check Loop forever if you want the animation to repeat continuously.
  • Set the Delay between frames where unspecified (default is usually 100 milliseconds).
  • Set Frame disposal where unspecified to your preferred default (choose One frame per layer (replace) if you do not want overlapping transparent frames).
  • Click Export to generate the final animated file.
