How to Convert Floating Selection to Layer in GIMP

When you paste an element or make a duplicate selection in GIMP, it appears as a temporary "Floating Selection (Pasted Layer)" that locks editing on other layers until anchored or converted. This guide outlines the quick, standard methods required to convert that floating selection into a fully independent raster layer, allowing you to edit, transform, and manage the content freely.

Method 1: Using the New Layer Button

  1. Open the Layers panel on the right side of the screen (or press Ctrl + L if it is not visible).
  2. Locate the row labeled Floating Selection (Pasted Layer) at the top of the layer stack.
  3. Click the Create a new layer icon located at the bottom-left corner of the Layers panel (represented by a blank document with a plus sign).
  4. The floating selection will instantly convert into a regular layer named "Pasted Layer." Double-click the name to rename it if desired.

Method 2: Using the Layer Menu

  1. Ensure the floating selection is active on your canvas or selected in the Layers dialog.
  2. Navigate to the top application menu and click Layer.
  3. Select To New Layer from the dropdown menu.
  4. Alternatively, use the default keyboard shortcut: Shift + Ctrl + N.

Method 3: Using the Context Menu

  1. In the Layers panel, right-click directly on the Floating Selection (Pasted Layer) entry.
  2. From the context menu that appears, click To New Layer.

Once completed using any of these methods, the pasted content becomes an isolated raster layer that will no longer anchor back to the underlying layer when you click elsewhere on the canvas.
