How to Configure Mandala Symmetry in GIMP

This guide explains how to set up and configure Mandala symmetry painting in GIMP, focusing specifically on adjusting the number of radial slices and rotation angles. By mastering these settings in the Symmetry Painting dockable dialog, you can quickly generate complex, balanced circular patterns and kaleidoscopic designs using any standard brush tool.

1. Open the Symmetry Painting Dialog

To access Mandala symmetry settings, you must first open the Symmetry Painting panel:

  1. Launch GIMP and open or create a canvas.
  2. Go to the top menu and select Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Symmetry Painting.
  3. The Symmetry Painting panel will appear in your workspace docks.

2. Enable Mandala Symmetry

In the Symmetry Painting panel:

  1. Click the Type dropdown menu (which defaults to None).
  2. Select Mandala from the list.

Mandala symmetry combines radial rotation with mirror reflection, generating dual-reflection pairs arranged around a central axis.

3. Configure the Number of Radial Slices

The number of radial slices determines how many symmetrical segments divide the 360-degree circle around your origin point:

  1. Locate the Number of points setting in the Mandala options.
  2. Enter a numerical value or drag the slider.
  3. Each "point" creates a pair of mirrored strokes. For example, setting the value to 6 creates 6 radial axes with 12 mirrored segments total, while a value of 4 creates an 8-segment symmetrical layout.

4. Adjust the Rotation Angle

The rotation angle shifts the orientation of all symmetry axes around the central point without moving the center itself:

  1. Locate the Angle property directly below the slice settings.
  2. Enter an angle value between -180.0° and 180.0° (or 0° to 360°, depending on your GIMP version) or drag the slider.
  3. Adjusting this value rotates the entire symmetry grid clockwise or counterclockwise, allowing you to align slices to specific canvas landmarks or create diagonal symmetry orientations.

5. Set the Center Point

For rotation and slices to render accurately, define the pivot point:

  • Center X / Center Y: Manually enter pixel coordinates to anchor the mandala to a precise location, such as the exact center of your image dimensions.
  • Canvas Guide: Alternatively, click the coordinate picker icon next to the Center coordinates and click anywhere on the canvas to place the origin visually.

Once these parameters are set, select any painting tool (such as the Paintbrush, Pencil, or Airbrush) and draw on the canvas to see your custom slices and rotation angle applied in real time.
