How to Close Line Art Gaps in GIMP Automatically

Digital artists often encounter unclosed line art, which causes colors to bleed into surrounding areas when using traditional fill tools. GIMP solves this issue through its smart Line Art Detection algorithm within the Bucket Fill tool. This guide explains how to locate, configure, and adjust the line art closure threshold—specifically the Maximum Gap Length setting—to automatically detect, bridge, and fill shapes that have small gaps without altering the original linework.

Step 1: Select the Bucket Fill Tool

  1. Open your project in GIMP.
  2. Select the Bucket Fill Tool from the Tools panel or press Shift + B.
  3. Open the Tool Options dialog (if not visible, go to Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Tool Options).

Step 2: Enable Line Art Detection

  1. In the Tool Options panel, scroll down to find the Fill by setting.
  2. Change the dropdown menu from Similar colors to Line art detection.
  3. Under the Source section, set where GIMP should read the lines:
    • Choose All visible layers if your line art is separated from your background.
    • Choose Active layer if your line art resides on the currently selected layer.

Step 3: Configure the Gap Closure Threshold

The closure threshold in GIMP is defined by the Maximum gap length parameter, which dictates the size of open line gaps the tool will automatically bridge:

  1. Locate the Maximum gap length slider under the Line Art Detection settings.
  2. Set the value in pixels:
    • Small breaks (default: 3–5 px): Ideal for subtle imperfections, textured brushes, or fine pencil strokes.
    • Larger breaks (8–15+ px): Useful for loose, sketchy linework. Avoid setting this value too high, as it may cause narrow intentional openings (such as between fingers or hair strands) to close unintentionally.
  3. Check the Spline stroke ends box. Enabling this allows GIMP to curve the closure lines naturally following the trajectory of the strokes, creating a cleaner boundary than a straight line bridge.

Step 4: Test and Fine-Tune the Fill

  1. Click inside an unclosed area on your canvas to fill it.
  2. If paint leaks outside the lines: Increase the Maximum gap length slider incrementally until the leak stops.
  3. If adjacent areas are incorrectly blocked off: Decrease the Maximum gap length slider to allow tighter spaces to remain open.
  4. Optional: Adjust Maximum growing size to push the fill pixels slightly beneath the line art, preventing white halos around the edges.
