How to Change Waveforms in GIMP Ripple Filter
The GEGL Ripple filter in GIMP allows you to distort images using mathematical wave patterns, offering the option to switch between sine, sawtooth, and triangle waveforms to achieve distinct visual styles. This guide explains how to access the Ripple filter settings and select the specific waveform you need to customize your image distortion directly within GIMP.
Accessing the Ripple Filter
- Open your image in GIMP and select the layer you want to distort.
- In the top menu bar, click on Filters.
- Hover over the Distorts submenu.
- Click on Ripple... to open the GEGL-based Ripple tool dialog.
Switching the Waveform
- In the Ripple dialog window, locate the parameter labeled Wave type.
- Click on the dropdown menu next to Wave type.
- Choose your desired waveform from the list:
- Sine: Produces a smooth, natural, and continuous curve.
- Triangle: Creates a sharp, linear, zig-zag pattern with uniform slopes.
- Sawtooth: Generates an asymmetrical wave that ramps up linearly and drops sharply.
Adjusting and Applying the Effect
Once you select your waveform, you can fine-tune the distortion using the surrounding controls:
- Period: Adjusts the width or frequency of each wave cycle.
- Amplitude: Controls the height or intensity of the distortion.
- Angle: Rotates the direction in which the waves travel across the canvas.
- Phase shift: Offsets the starting point of the wave pattern.
Check the Preview box to see your changes in real time. Once satisfied with the waveform shape and its parameters, click OK to apply the effect to your layer.
