How to Change Quick Mask Color and Opacity in GIMP

By default, GIMP displays the Quick Mask as a translucent red overlay to help you visualize selections. However, if you are working on an image with a predominantly red background or subject, this default mask can be difficult to see. Fortunately, GIMP allows you to customize both the color and the opacity of the Quick Mask overlay to ensure maximum contrast and visibility for any project.

Steps to Change Quick Mask Color and Opacity

  1. Locate the Quick Mask Button
Open your image in GIMP. Look at the lower-left corner of the image window, right next to the horizontal scrollbar. You will see a small, dashed-square icon (the Quick Mask toggle button).

  2. Open the Configuration Menu
Right-click on the Quick Mask icon. In the context menu that appears, click on Configure Color and Opacity....

  3. Select a New Color
A dialog box titled "Configure Color and Opacity" will appear. Click on the colored rectangle to open the color picker. Choose a color that strongly contrasts with your image (such as bright green, blue, or yellow), then click OK.

  4. Adjust the Opacity
In the same dialog box, find the Opacity slider directly below the color box. Drag the slider left to make the mask more transparent or right to make it more opaque. A setting between 30% and 50% usually works best for most editing tasks.

  5. Apply Changes
Click OK in the configuration dialog to save your settings.

Once saved, toggle the Quick Mask on by pressing Shift + Q (or clicking the Quick Mask button) to see your new overlay color and opacity applied instantly. These settings will persist across your future GIMP sessions until you choose to change them again.
