How to Change New Layer Fill Color in GIMP
In GIMP, whether a newly created layer initializes as transparent, white, a foreground color, or a background color is determined by the "Fill with" option inside the "Create a New Layer" dialog. GIMP defaults to remembering the last fill type you selected during your session, applying it automatically to subsequent layers unless manually adjusted. Understanding how to access this dialog and configure these settings ensures your workflow remains fast and predictable.
The "Create a New Layer" Dialog
To access the fill settings for a new layer:
- Go to the top menu and select Layer > New Layer..., press Shift + Ctrl + N, or click the Create a new layer icon (the blank page with a plus sign) at the bottom of the Layers dockable dialog.
- In the dialog window that appears, look for the Fill with drop-down menu near the bottom.
Available Fill Options
Under the Fill with setting, you can choose from five initialization states:
- Transparency: Creates an entirely transparent layer containing an alpha channel and no visible pixel data.
- Foreground color: Fills the entire layer with the currently active foreground color shown in your main toolbox swatch.
- Background color: Fills the layer with the currently active background color shown in your main toolbox swatch.
- White: Fills the entire layer with pure white
(
#FFFFFF), regardless of your current palette colors. - Pattern: Fills the layer with whatever pattern is currently active in your Patterns dockable dialog.
How GIMP Remembers Your Choice
GIMP preserves your choice from the "Fill with" menu for the remainder of your session. The next time you open the "Create a New Layer" dialog, the setting will stay on whichever option you chose last.
If you hold Shift while clicking the Create a new layer button in the Layers dock, GIMP will bypass the dialog box entirely and immediately create a new layer using your previous settings, including your last-used "Fill with" selection.
New Canvas Defaults vs. New Layer Defaults
It is important to distinguish between creating a new layer within an open project and creating a brand-new project. While individual layer fills are controlled via the layer dialog, the initial fill of a brand-new canvas is controlled in Edit > Preferences > Default Image. Under the Advanced Options of that menu, you will find an identical Fill with setting that dictates the starting state of the very first background layer for newly generated documents.
