How to Change Layer Composite Space in GIMP

In GIMP, the composite space controls whether layer blending occurs in a linear light or a gamma-corrected perceptual color space. This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to switch the composite space of an individual layer between Auto, RGB (linear), and RGB (perceptual) using the Layers dockable dialog.

Method 1: Using the Layer Context Menu

The fastest way to adjust the composite space is directly from the Layers panel:

  1. Open the Layers dialog by pressing Ctrl + L (or Cmd + L on macOS) if it is not already visible.
  2. Right-click the specific layer you wish to modify.
  3. In the context menu, hover your cursor over Composite Space.
  4. Select one of the available options:
    • Auto: Uses the default color space assigned to the active layer blend mode.
    • RGB (linear): Performs compositing in a physically accurate linear color space, which prevents dark borders and artifacts when blending colors.
    • RGB (perceptual): Performs compositing in gamma-corrected sRGB space, matching traditional image editing behavior.

Method 2: Using the Layer Attributes Dialog

You can also adjust the composite space through the layer's properties window:

  1. In the Layers dialog, double-click the layer name or right-click the layer and select Edit Layer Attributes....
  2. Locate the Composite space dropdown menu near the bottom of the dialog.
  3. Choose Auto, RGB (linear), or RGB (perceptual) from the list.
  4. Click OK to apply the change immediately.
