How to Change GIMP Long Shadow Styles
This guide explains how to access GIMP's built-in Long Shadow filter and switch between the Finite, Infinite, and Fading shadow styles. By adjusting this single dropdown setting, you can instantly alter the behavior, length, and visual impact of cast shadows on text, logos, or isolated objects.
Accessing the Long Shadow Filter
- Open your project in GIMP and select the layer containing the graphic or text you want to style.
- In the top menu bar, navigate to Filters.
- Hover over Light and Shadow and click on Long Shadow....
Toggling the Shadow Style
Once the Long Shadow dialog window opens, you will see a list of parameters to control the effect:
- Locate the Style setting near the top of the dialog window.
- Click the dropdown menu next to Style to view the
available options:
- Finite: Generates a solid shadow that stops at a specific pixel distance determined by the Length slider.
- Infinite: Extends the shadow endlessly along the chosen Angle until it reaches the borders of your image canvas, ignoring the Length setting.
- Fading: Creates a shadow that dissipates smoothly into transparency, allowing you to use the Fade length and Midpoint controls to fine-tune the gradient transition.
- Select your desired style from the list. The preview on the canvas will update immediately if the Preview checkbox is enabled.
- Adjust the Angle, Color, and style-specific sliders below the dropdown to customize the look.
- Click OK to apply the shadow to your layer.
