How to Change GIMP Icon Themes

Customizing the visual workspace in GIMP can significantly improve workflow and reduce eye strain during long editing sessions. This guide explains how to access the interface preferences in GIMP to switch between different icon and interface themes, including dark, gray, and light styles, as well as how to adjust icon sizes.

Step 1: Open the Preferences Menu

To access the customization settings:

  • Windows and Linux: Click on Edit in the top menu bar and select Preferences.
  • macOS: Click on GIMP in the top application bar and select Preferences.

Step 2: Navigate to the Interface Settings

In the left sidebar of the Preferences window, locate the Interface category. Click on the arrow or double-click Interface to expand its subcategories if they are not already visible.

Step 3: Select Your Preferred Theme and Icon Theme

GIMP separates interface colors from the icons themselves:

  1. Adjust the UI Canvas (Theme):
    • Click on Theme in the left panel.
    • Choose from Dark, Gray, Light, or System to change the background shade of the menus, toolbars, and panels.
  2. Select the Icon Theme:
    • Click on Icon Theme directly below Theme in the left panel.
    • Select your preferred icon set:
      • Symbolic: A monochromatic icon set designed to work well with the Dark theme.
      • Symbolic-Inverted: Ideal for Gray and Light themes, providing dark icons against light backgrounds.
      • Color: The classic, full-color GIMP icons.
      • Legacy: The original icon style from older versions of GIMP.

Step 4: Adjust Icon Size (Optional)

At the bottom of the Icon Theme settings panel, you can control the icon scaling:

  • Set Icon size from the theme to let GIMP decide the size automatically.
  • Select Custom icon size and move the slider to switch between Small, Medium, Large, or Huge icons to match your screen resolution.

Step 5: Save the Changes

Click OK at the bottom-right corner of the Preferences dialog box. The interface will update immediately without requiring a restart.
