How to Add New Dockable Dialogs in GIMP?
Managing your workspace efficiently in GIMP requires knowing how to customize your interface by adding, moving, and organizing dockable dialogs. This article provides a straightforward, step-by-step guide on how to find missing menus, open new dialogs, and dock them into your existing layout to create a personalized workflow. Whether you accidentally closed a layer menu or need to bring up a new tool options box, you will learn exactly how to restore and arrange your workspace.
Step 1: Locating the Dockable Dialogs Menu
To add any new dialog to your GIMP workspace, you need to access the central repository of available menus.
- Look at the top menu bar of your GIMP window.
- Click on the Windows menu.
- Hover your mouse over Dockable Dialogs.
A large submenu will expand, listing every available dialog in GIMP, including Layers, Channels, Paths, Tool Options, Undo History, and Brushes.
Step 2: Opening and Floating a Dialog
Once you see the list of dockable dialogs, click on the one you want to add to your workspace.
When you click a dialog (for example, Undo History), it will typically open in one of two ways depending on your current view mode:
- Single-Window Mode: It will automatically attach itself as a tab in your dominant dock or open as a separate, floating window on top of your workspace.
- Multi-Window Mode: It will open as a standalone floating dialog box that you can position anywhere on your screen.
Step 3: Docking the Dialog into Your Workspace
If the dialog opens as a floating window, or if you want to move it to a different section of your screen, you can dock it.
- Click and hold the drag handle of the dialog. The drag handle is the actual tab area or the title bar of the dialog box (where the name and icon are displayed).
- Drag the dialog toward the docking area where you want to place it. As you move it over existing docks, specific regions will highlight in blue.
- Choose your placement based on the highlight:
- Hovering over the center of an existing tab group allows you to drop the dialog as a new tab in that exact notebook.
- Hovering over the top, bottom, or sides of an existing dock allows you to split the dock, placing the new dialog above, below, or alongside the current one.
- Release the mouse button to drop and lock the dialog into place.
Tips for Managing Your Dialog Layout
- Locking Tabs: If you find yourself accidentally dragging tabs out of place, click the small Tab Menu triangle (arrow icon) on the right side of the dialog tab, go to Tab Menu, and check Lock Tab to Dock.
- Closing Unwanted Dialogs: To remove a dialog and free up screen real estate, click the Tab Menu triangle on that specific tab and select Close Tab.
- Resetting the Workspace: If your workspace becomes too cluttered or you lose track of your windows, you can reset GIMP to its default layout. Go to Edit > Preferences > Window Management and click Reset Saved Window Positions to Default Values, then restart GIMP.
