GIMP Space Invasion: Layer Color Management Explained

The Space Invasion project is a foundational architectural upgrade within GIMP that introduces per-layer color space management. Powered by the GEGL (Generic Graphical Library) and babl color conversion engines, this initiative fundamentally overhauls how the application handles color by allowing individual layers, masks, and channels within a single project to operate in distinct color spaces, dynamic ranges, and profiles.

Historically, image editors, including older versions of GIMP, enforced a rigid color model: the entire image document was constrained to a single global color space, such as sRGB or Adobe RGB. If a user imported an asset with a wider color gamut or a different transfer function (such as linear light versus gamma-corrected light), the layer had to be permanently converted to the master document's color space, often causing clipping, posterization, or banding.

Space Invasion eliminates these constraints by decoupling the image's canvas profile from individual layer properties. Under this architecture, babl tracks the exact color space of every pixel buffer throughout the processing pipeline. A layer can retain its native wide-gamut space (such as DCI-P3 or ProPhoto RGB) alongside an sRGB layer without requiring destructive downsampling or manual color profile conversions.

This independence transforms layer compositing and blending. Users can choose whether layer blending and filtering occur in linear light, non-linear gamma-corrected space, or custom spaces optimized for specific artistic tasks. Linear light compositing prevents the dark fringing artifacts commonly seen when blending contrasting colors, while perceptual spaces remain available for operations that require traditional paint-mixing behavior.

Space Invasion also enables hybrid workflows where grayscale masks, high-dynamic-range floating-point buffers, and different RGB profiles interact dynamically. When rendering to the screen or exporting to a final file format, GIMP computes the exact color conversions on the fly, preserving the maximum possible fidelity of every asset until the final composite is generated.
