GIMP Settings for Maximizing New Image Windows
In GIMP, whether a newly opened image appears maximized or expands to fill the screen depends primarily on the workspace layout mode—specifically Single-Window Mode—alongside the Zoom & Resize Behavior options found in the Preferences menu. While GIMP does not feature a single button labeled "Auto-Maximize," the combination of Single-Window Mode and window resize preferences dictates whether an image opens within a full-screen unified workspace or as a floating window sized to the image canvas.
Single-Window Mode vs. Multi-Window Mode
The most common reason newly opened images automatically fill the entire screen is that GIMP is operating in Single-Window Mode.
- Single-Window Mode (Enabled): All toolboxes, panels, and image canvases are locked inside one unified master window. When you open a new image, it appears as a tab inside the central canvas area. If the main GIMP window is maximized, the image automatically takes up the entire available working space.
- Multi-Window Mode (Disabled): Each open image spawns in its own detached, floating window separate from the toolbox and dockable dialogs.
How to Toggle Single-Window Mode
- Open GIMP.
- Click Windows in the top menu bar.
- Click Single-Window Mode to check or uncheck the option.
When unchecked, GIMP switches to floating windows, preventing images from automatically expanding to fill the entire application container.
Image Window Zoom and Resize Preferences
If you are using multi-window mode and floating image windows are still expanding to the edges of your display, GIMP’s internal resize behaviors are responsible.
By default, GIMP attempts to size a floating window to fit the pixel dimensions of the image being opened. For high-resolution files, this causes the floating window to expand to the maximum allowable dimensions of your monitor.
Adjusting Window Resize Settings
- Navigate to Edit > Preferences (or GIMP > Preferences on macOS).
- In the left-hand sidebar, expand or click on Image Windows.
- Under the Zoom & Resize Behavior section,
locate the following settings:
- Resize window on zoom: Automatically alters the floating window's boundaries whenever you zoom in or out.
- Resize window on image size change: Resizes the window whenever canvas dimensions change or a new image is loaded.
- Uncheck these boxes to stop floating image windows from dynamically expanding across your desktop.
- Click OK to save changes.
Window Management and Saved Positions
GIMP can also remember the window state from your previous session through your operating system's window manager.
If an image window was manually maximized and saved, future image windows may inherit that maximized state upon launch.
- Go to Edit > Preferences > Window Management.
- Review the Window Positions section:
- If Save window positions on exit is checked, GIMP reopens image windows in the exact state (maximized or restored) they were in when last closed.
- To reset unintended maximized states, click the Reset Saved Window Positions to Default Values button.
- Click OK and restart GIMP.
