GIMP Channel Recompose Image Dimension Requirements
The Channel Recompose feature in GIMP allows users to assemble separated grayscale channel images back into a single, full-color image. To successfully execute this command, specific image dimension rules must be strictly followed. This article explains the exact dimensional requirements GIMP enforces when recomposing channels, why these rules exist, and how to avoid errors during the process.
Identical Pixel Dimensions
The primary requirement for executing the Channel Recompose command is that all source channel images or layers must have the exact same width and height in pixels. GIMP reconstructs the target image by reading the tonal values of each corresponding pixel across all designated color channels (such as Red, Green, and Blue, or Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key).
If even one channel differs in width or height by a single pixel, GIMP cannot map the components together. Attempting to run the command with mismatched dimensions will result in an error message, and the operation will be aborted.
Aspect Ratio and Canvas Size Consistency
Beyond nominal layer dimensions, both the canvas sizes and layer boundaries across all component images must align:
- Canvas Boundaries: The working canvas of each decomposed channel file must be identical.
- Layer Dimensions: If a channel image consists of multiple layers or floating selections, the layer representing the channel data must match the canvas size fully. If a layer is smaller than the canvas or offset, it must be flattened or scaled to the image size prior to recomposition.
Scaling and Cropping Rules During Editing
If you edit individual channels prior to recomposition, any spatial modifications must be applied uniformly:
- No Independent Resizing: You cannot scale, stretch, or crop an individual channel independently of the others.
- Synchronized Cropping: If you need to crop the image while decomposed, you must apply the identical crop coordinates and dimensions to every single channel image.
- Uniform Resampling: If resizing is necessary, scale every channel file to the exact same target resolution and pixel dimensions before triggering the Recompose command.
Following these dimension constraints ensures that GIMP correctly maps every pixel value to its respective color component without alignment errors or operation failures.
