GIMP Align Tool: Relative To Settings Explained
In GIMP, the "Relative to" dropdown menu in the Align tool determines the reference boundary used to position your layers, paths, or text boxes. Instead of moving items blindly, this setting establishes an anchor—such as the full canvas, a specific selection, or another layer—against which your selected objects are aligned horizontally or vertically. Understanding how each option works ensures precise, predictable placement across your design projects.
How the "Relative To" Setting Works
When you activate the Align tool (shortcut Q) and click on an element on your canvas, the alignment buttons (such as Align Left, Center, or Top) shift that element toward a specific target. The "Relative to" dropdown dictates what that target is.
Here is what each option does:
- Image: Uses the edges of the entire image canvas as the reference point. For example, clicking "Align Center" with "Image" selected will move your target layer to the exact horizontal or vertical center of the entire canvas.
- Selection: Uses the bounding box of the currently active selection (the area surrounded by marching ants) as the reference point. If you have drawn a small rectangular selection in the corner of your canvas, aligning an object will position it relative to the borders of that specific selection rather than the full image.
- Active Layer: Uses the boundaries of the layer currently highlighted in the Layers dialog as the reference point. This allows you to position one layer directly relative to another layer's size and location without altering the position of the active layer itself.
- Active Channel: Uses the boundaries of the currently selected channel in the Channels dialog as the reference point. This is typically used when you have saved complex masks or selections as channels and want to align elements to the extents of that channel's content.
- Active Path: Uses the bounding box of the currently active vector path (selected in the Paths dialog) as the reference point. Any alignment actions will align your chosen element to the outermost edges of that specific vector shape or line.
Using the Tool Effectively
To use these settings, choose your desired reference in the "Relative to" dropdown first. Next, click on the element on the canvas you wish to move. Finally, click the desired alignment button (Left, Center, Right, Top, Middle, Bottom) in the tool options panel to instantly snap the element into place relative to your chosen reference.
